Ft. McRee & Ft. Pickens Tours
Fort Pickens: For over a century, Fort Pickens guarded the entrance to the Pensacola Bay Harbor and the Navy Shipyard, protecting the American coastline from foreign invasion. The fort has withstood the actions of war, time, and the elements. Named after Revolutionary War hero General Andrew Pickens, the fort was the largest of the four forts built in this area. During the War of 1812, vulnerabilities along America’s shores were exploited by British forces. In response, the United States constructed a system of over 40 coastal forts. These forts could withstand cannon balls fired from wooden ships. Fort Pickens is an enduring monument to a time in American history when our independence and national security were dependent upon the brick and mortar of our seacoast fortifications. Learn more about Fort Pickens.
Fort McRee once stood on land that now belongs to the National Park Service, it is open to anyone visiting Gulf Islands National Seashore. However, the area is remote and no visitor facilities of any kind exist. Due to its location on a site accessible only by foot or boat, Fort McRee was left to the elements.
The lighthouse seen in the movie *jaws 2*, was built here, on the end of the island west of Fort Pickens.
3 Hour Tour – includes an 1.5 beach stop at Ft. McRee where you can swim, walk the shoreline, explore the island and older civil war fort remnants.
